Filling Your Cup Up

Taking care of yourself = keeping your cup full. If you don’t do things to keep your cup full, you have nothing left to give or share with others.
We are taught that putting ourselves before others is selfish, but I see it time and time again. That we are running around taking care of all of the things wearing ourselves ragged. Then if we don't stop and take care of ourselves things start to go down hill in all areas of our life because we are depleted nothing seems to go right and we start this downward spiral. If we let this go on for too long then we end up getting sick and we are forced to take some down time, this always seems to happen at the least convenient time. Sometimes we even keep going even when we are sick. ( I know this quite well, because this used to be me.) This is not healthy!
When we try to keep going from this place we are giving from an empty cup. You are not helping anyone, It is like if you came across someone who was extremely thirsty in the dessert and you handed them an empty water bottle because that is all you had. You can't help them!
There is a better way. We can put ourselves first. You may have so much on your plate that this may be difficult at first. For me it actually meant getting up a little bit earlier than usual to give myself the time that I needed. This is hard at first, but now it is something that I always do because it makes everything else better. For me I spend that time meditating and doing Yoga.
It does not really matter what it is I know women who go for a walk every morning or sit and journal or pray. Things that can replenish your mind, body and soul. Feed you mind with something that is inspirational to you. Feed your body with the things that will help you replenish your energy, enough sleep, good for you food and some kind of movement. Do things that feed your soul.
One of the most profound things that helped me with this was. Would you ever treat someone you loved the way you are treating yourself? Then it was also brought to my attention, that because I am a mother I was teaching my children how to treat themselves this way. I decided many years ago to start to give myself time every single day, because I do this it helps me start my day off right. It also helps me free up more time. When I meditate it helps me because I feel more centered and calm and I have a smoother day and make fewer mistakes. Which frees up time. I have a clearer sense of what I need to be doing and how to accomplish it in a more efficient way, which frees up more time. I am not distracting myself with things like picking up my phone to see what notifications I have, or what's the latest news because I am focused on what I am doing, which frees up more time. When I do this I am happier and I can give to others and help them better, because I am giving from a full cup.
How are you going to fill your cup?
How would doing this make things better for you and the ones you love?
